Event Volunteers
Australia has a very
proud Olympic history in the sport of Eventing. It is competitions
held by Equestrian Federation clubs such as Fig Tree Pocket that provide our
elite riders with the opportunity to maintain and improve their skills. An overview
of Eventing is available at the
FEI International website.
The Fig Tree Pocket
Equestrian Club holds weekend competitions several times a year. There
are many jobs that need to be done to run a successful event, and we are
greatly appreciative of any volunteer assistance that can be obtained.
Eventing competition
dates for 2010 are:
March 20-21
July 25-26
October 30-31

Event Volunteer Tasks
Dressage Pencillors
A dressage pencillor is allocated to sit with each of the dressage
judges. The pencillor writes down the scores and
comments dictated by the judge as each of the horses performs their dressage test.
Drinks and nibbles are usually provided during the scheduled breaks.
Volunteers: 6-8 required
Workload: sitting and writing
Duration: Saturday morning, 8:00am to approx 11:00am
Arena Setup
At the completion of the dressage phase on Saturday morning, the
plastic dressage arenas need to be pulled down, and the show jumps setup for the
next morning. This job follows on immediately at the completion of the dressage.
Any pencillors wishing to stay on after dressage may also volunteer to assist
with the arena setup if they wish.
Volunteers: 2-4 required
Workload: Light to moderate lifting and carrying
Duration: Approx 1-2 hours early Saturday afternoon (after completion of the dressage
at about 11:00am)
Cross Country Jump Stewards
The cross country course is marked over about 3km with
approx 25 fences (jumps) spread over this distance. There is an initial
group briefing, just prior to the start, to show you what to do. A
jump steward sits at a fence and marks a score sheet when a horse and rider jumps
it. Horses come through the course one at a time at 1 minute intervals.
Stewards sit down for the duration with a score sheet and a 2-way radio,
and are usually provided with a mini-esky with drinks and nibbles. Cross
country starts at 8:00am and normally finishes well before lunch. This
job is where we need the greatest number of volunteers. There is only 1
steward required for each fence, but
you are welcome to bring a friend for company if you like.
Volunteers: 20-25 required
Workload: sitting and writing
Duration: Sunday morning, 8:00am to approx 11:00am
Show Jumping Rail Stewards
Rail stewards are responsible for sitting an the side of
the arena during the show jumping phase on Sunday. If a horse knocks
down a jump, the rail stewards go out at the completion of the round and
put the rails back up for the next horse. Between classes, the rail
stewards alter the height of the jumps for the next set of riders. Show
jumping starts mid-morning and runs all afternoon. You can stay as long
(or short) as you like. This is a fairly relaxed job.
Volunteers: 2-4 required
Workload: moderate lifting/carrying
Duration: Sunday afternoon (lunchtime until competition end)
Canteen Assistants
The equestrian club runs a basic canteen for the duration
of the event, and needs helping hands to serve at the counter.
Volunteers: 2-4 required
Workload: standing/serving
Duration: Saturday & Sunday
